South Africans making a difference

South Africans making a difference

Over the past few months South Africa has been experiencing a potentially crippling drought brought on by the worst El Nino in decades.

Farmers are struggling without water and feed supply. Cases of farmer giving their livestock away have been reported due to not being able to feed their animals.

People returning home after the holiday say there are carcasses in the fields of animals that starved and dehydrated.

We all realize this might have serious impacts on South Africa’s food security and that we can expect food prices to skyrocket.

But with all these truths being said, I can truly say if there was a time to be a proud South African, that time is now.

Daily I read about farmers being helped in social media. In November last year NC Schoombe and Nico Gerber started an organisation called “Boere in Nood” to coordinate the logical aspects of water and feed being donated to farmers in need all over the country. Cash donations, water for animal/human consumption and everyday use are being donated. Over a 1000 bales of feed from the South Cape areas has been donated and transported in land to farmers who need it most.

Even though donations are still in desperate need, it’s wonderful to see South Africans stand together like this. It’s truly moving to see the difference being made and communities coming together to help. If you want to make a difference, please feel free to visit the Facebook group “Boere in Nood” and DONATE!!!
